Traveling preachers stir up reaction at university

Photos I took for the Johnsonian photostream. A group of traveling evangelist who lead by a man who calls himself, Shawn the Baptist demonstrated on Winthrop University's campus.

The group of five preached loudly to students warning them of the dangers of drinking, smoking, mixing races, pre-marital sex, homosexuality, and abortion. In a couple hours hundreds of students met in the common-area to give a counter demonstration. The event turned into massive demonstration of free speech.

First print work in a while

So I have yet to update my print work from school. It was mostly photos and a few photo illustrations, but I'll have to save that for a rainy day. Right now when I'm not interning at WYFF 4, NBC's station in Greenville SC I am writing and taking pictures for the Laurens County Advertiser.

Here's a PDF screen shot of a photo spread and story I did on several cancer survivors. Talking to these beautiful strong people was an experience I won't forget.

Here's a link to the online edition.

Here are the individual pictures. Each person I talked to had a different story, a different life expectancy, but the common bond and fire.

"Stranger in a Strange Place Still"

This summer, in April my grandmother Claire DeBlois Brown died of cancer at the age of 85. She was my greatest mentor, and probably my best friend. This summer was hard for everyone, but we gathered together like families do. She was a remarkable and beautiful woman and I will always miss her.

Below are pictures from the quiet family gathering we had. She did not want a funeral and would "very well come back and haunt us," if we put her in the ground. So we visited the grave-site of my late grandfather who died several years ago- as well as my uncle who died of pancreatic cancer last year.

I HAVE BEEN SLACK....

So I have not posted on this since last year. Partly this is because I haven't been doing as much writing, but mostly because I have been lazy. Which contributes to both of these factors.

Anyway, I haven't been writing newspaper stories, but I have been taking pictures. Oh and writing broadcast scripts cause that's what I do. :)

In conclusion: I decided I would post some pictures that have been published by The Johnsonian (Winthrop Newspaper) in the last school year.

:)

Get my bloggin' done!

This picture went along with a story that profiled the Muslim students on campus during Ramadan.

Students volunteered at a community garden which gives food to underprivileged citizens.

A teaser picture for a campus-wide smoking ban.

Also part of the smoking ban story. Trying to show that smokers often make their own community, and use smoking as a way to make friends and relax.

Part of a story on the phenomenon of "purity rings" that people wear who pledge to not have sex until marriage. The story focused on the statistic that claims their is not much change in the behavior of someone who does wear one compared to those that don't.

One of our writers, pictured here, wrote a column on giving blood for the first time.

Trick-Or-Treaters from all over Rock Hill came out to the dorms to snag some candy. :)

These are basically the most interesting pictures I've taken so far, they're a whole lot more interesting with the actual stories...which is why I need to get on that!
